A plan drawn to scale lets you trust what you see: a room that looks big enough on screen really is. Pick a scale, then draw on a grid where each square equals a real distance.

Choosing the right scale

The tool offers three grid scales: 1 square = 0.5 m, 1 square = 1 m and 1 square = 1 ft. Use the finer 0.5 m scale for a single room or flat where every few centimetres matter. Use 1 m or 1 ft when you are laying out a whole house on a larger plot, so the entire plan fits on the screen.

Measure the plot or room with a tape first and write the numbers down. Then count squares as you draw, instead of eyeballing.

Keeping your drawing honest

How to use it

  1. Measure the plot or room and note each length.
  2. Select the grid scale that lets the whole plan fit on screen.
  3. Draw the outer boundary, counting grid squares against your measurements.
  4. Divide the space into rooms with interior walls.
  5. Check the total area against your measured figure, then export the plan.

Frequently asked questions

What does drawing to scale mean?

It means every distance on the drawing is a fixed fraction of the real distance, so measurements read from the plan match the real building.

Which scale should I use for a house plan?

Use 1 m or 1 ft per square for a whole house, and 0.5 m per square for a single room or small flat where finer detail matters.

Can I draw in feet or metres?

Yes. The tool has grid scales in both metres and feet, so you can work in whichever unit you measured in.

Is this a substitute for architectural drawings?

No. It is a planning tool for testing layouts. Permit and construction drawings must be prepared by qualified professionals.
