This last point is crucial. A wall colour you chose under the daylight flooding through a south-facing window will look completely different at 8pm under your artificial lighting. A warm terracotta that feels rich and cosy under incandescent light can look orange and harsh under cool LED. This isn't a failure of the paint; it's a failure to test the combination.
Colour Temperature: The Most Important Lighting Variable

Cool white / daylight (5000Kโ6500K)
Crisp, energetic, and accurate for colour rendering. Makes cool colours (whites, blues, greens) look clean and vivid; makes warm colours look washed out. Excellent for task lighting, garages, workshops, and commercial spaces. Often wrong for residential spaces where comfort matters more than precision.

Layered Lighting: The Professional Approach
Professional interior designers always use layered lighting โ multiple light sources at different heights, angles, and intensities that can be adjusted independently. This is the single biggest difference between a home that was "lit" and one that was "designed".
Ambient lighting
The base layer โ general illumination that fills the room without glare. Usually ceiling-mounted: recessed downlights, flush ceiling fixtures, or pendants. Provides enough light to move around and see clearly but isn't bright enough for focused tasks. Typically 300โ500 lux for living spaces.
Task lighting
Directed light for specific activities: under-cabinet lighting for kitchen work surfaces, a reading lamp beside a chair, desk lighting in a study, vanity lighting in a bathroom. Should be positioned to avoid casting shadows on the work surface (light from above and slightly behind the shoulder, not directly above, is usually best).
Accent lighting
Decorative or atmospheric light that highlights specific features: picture lights over artwork, directional spotlights on architectural features, LED strip lighting under a kitchen island. Adds depth and drama. Often controlled separately from ambient lighting so it can be used for evening atmosphere without full-room brightness.
Natural light
Often treated as a fourth layer. Window placement in your floor plan determines how much natural light enters, from which direction, and at what times of day. North-facing rooms (in the northern hemisphere) get consistent but indirect light. South-facing rooms get direct sunlight for parts of the day. East and west facing rooms get morning and afternoon sun respectively.
How to Use a Lighting Visualizer Effectively

The Most Common Residential Lighting Mistakes
All downlights, no variation
A ceiling grid of recessed downlights is comfortable and functional but produces flat, even light with no depth or atmosphere. It's fine for utility spaces but deadens living areas. Add floor lamps, table lamps, or wall sconces to create the variation in light levels that makes a room feel warm and inhabited.
Mixing colour temperatures in the same space
Warm and cool white bulbs in the same room look wrong โ the eye notices the inconsistency even if you can't articulate why. Choose one temperature for each space and stick to it for all fixtures in that room. The exception is task lighting vs ambient: you can have a cooler task lamp at a desk while maintaining warm ambient elsewhere, because the contrast is obviously intentional.
Lighting the ceiling instead of the room
Recessed downlights that point straight down illuminate the floor and create dark upper walls. This makes ceilings feel lower and rooms feel smaller. Angling some downlights to wash the walls bounces light upward and makes the room feel larger and better proportioned.
Ignoring the bathroom
Bathroom lighting is often an afterthought โ a single ceiling fixture in the centre of the room that casts shadows across the face when you're looking in the mirror. Vanity lighting positioned on either side of the mirror (or across the top) eliminates shadows and provides accurate colour rendering for tasks like makeup and shaving.

- Neutral white light + most colours: Generally reliable across wall colour families. A safe choice for spaces where colour accuracy matters (kitchens, home offices).
- Cool white light + warm wall colours: Often creates a harsh, washed-out effect that makes warm colours look pallid. Usually the wrong choice for residential spaces.
Planning Your Lighting Before You Build
The best time to make lighting decisions is at the floor plan stage โ before walls are closed in and electrical runs are fixed. Use your floor plan to mark the location of each light source, note its type and height, and check that the coverage overlaps appropriately. Ceiling fixtures should be positioned so their circles of illumination meet without significant dark spots between them.
